Local SEO for businesses: rank on Google when people search for your services

10 July 2026 · 6 min read · JetLevel

Try this test now: pick up your phone and search for your service followed by your city. "Plumber Braga". "Dental clinic Leiria". "Accountant Viana do Castelo". Does your business show up? If the answer is no, we have uncomfortable news: to whoever is searching, your business does not exist. And the customers who should be calling you are calling the competitor that appears in the top 3 of the map.

The 5 pillars of local SEO in Portugal 5 Steps to Master Local SEO 1. Google Business Profile Claim, complete and keep the profile active with photos and opening hours. 2. Real Reviews Ask satisfied customers for reviews and reply to all of them. 3. Consistent NAP Name, address and phone the same on the website, profile and directories. 4. Page per Service Create specific pages on the site with geographic context. 5. Content with Answers Answer the real questions customers ask before buying.
The five pillars that make a Portuguese business appear in local Google.

"Near me" changed everything: today, no one opens the phone book, they open Google. And a very significant part of local searches results in a visit or a call within the next 24 hours. In other words: whoever searches, buys. The only question is from whom.

The good news? Local SEO is the front where an SMB wins the most ground with the least budget, because most competitors still do not take it seriously. These are the five pillars to appear on Google when it matters.

What is local SEO (and why it is different from "normal" SEO)

SEO is the work of making Google understand, trust and recommend your business. Local SEO is the geographic version: instead of competing with the whole country, you compete for visibility in your area, for searches like "coffee near me".

In local searches, Google first shows the Map Pack: the block with the map and three featured businesses, which concentrates the vast majority of clicks. And there the competition is not Worten or Amazon, it is the business next door, most likely with a profile forgotten since 2021. The barrier to entry is low: consistency is what separates those who appear from those who disappear.

Pillar 1 and 3: Complete Google Business Profile and consistent NAP

If you could only do one thing for your local SEO, this would be it. Google Business Profile is your business card inside Google: it feeds the Map Pack, opening hours, photos, reviews and the "Call now" button. A profile that seriously competes has:

And keep it active: posts, new photos, answers to questions. A stalled profile tells the algorithm the business died.

Take the opportunity to audit the NAP (Name, Address, Phone): name, address and phone must be the same on the website, profile and directories. An old number forgotten in half a dozen directories is noise for Google, and noise costs positions.

Pillar 2: Reviews (ask without shame, reply to all)

Reviews are the 21st-century word of mouth and a ranking factor confirmed by Google. Double weight: they help you appear and be chosen. The recipe is simple:

  1. Ask for reviews systematically. At the end of each job, send the direct link by WhatsApp or email. Most satisfied customers gladly review: no one ever asked them.
  2. Reply to all. To the good ones, thank them with a detail of the service. To the bad ones, reply calmly and propose to resolve.
  3. Never buy reviews. Google detects artificial patterns and the penalty can cost the entire profile.

A business with 40 real reviews and replies to all almost always beats a business with 200 reviews and absolute silence.

Don't have time to do all this? Normal.

Pillar 4: The site needs a page per service

Google Business Profile brings visibility on the map, but the website remains the foundation. And here the mistake is almost universal: a "Services" page with a list of ten things in three lines each. Google does not rank generic pages for specific searches.

The right structure: one page per service, ideally with geographic context. A renovation company in Braga should have a page for "bathroom renovation" and another for "kitchen renovation", each with its own text, real photos and references to the area where it operates.

And the technical basics: the site must load fast, work well on mobile and convert. Appearing is half the battle, the other half is turning the visit into contact, as we explained in the article about the difference between a pretty website and a website that converts.

Pillar 5: Content that answers real questions

The most underestimated pillar: creating content that answers the questions customers ask before buying. "How much does it cost to renovate a kitchen?" Each of these questions is a Google search, and each search is an opportunity to appear.

This very article is the example: you are reading it because you searched exactly this topic. The right content attracts the right customer before the first sales conversation, the logic we explained in the article about how to sell without seeming like you are selling. Start with the ten questions customers ask you on the phone: ten questions, ten articles, ten new entry doors.

Honest expectations: months, not days

In ads, when you stop paying, you disappear the next day. In SEO, every review, page and article is an asset that keeps working for you. It is compound interest applied to visibility: slow at first, accelerates over time. In less competitive markets, the first moves in the Map Pack are noticeable in two to three months; in contested sectors, count on six or more. If someone promises you the first page in two weeks, be suspicious.

The right order of priorities, to start this week:

  1. Claim and complete Google Business Profile.
  2. Create the habit of asking for reviews, and reply to all.
  3. Audit NAP and correct outdated data.
  4. Structure the site with one page per service.
  5. Publish content that answers customers' real questions.

None of this is magic. It is method applied with consistency, which is exactly the part where most companies give up. At JetLevel we combine SEO and paid traffic according to each business phase, and the AI agents ensure no contact goes unanswered when SEO starts bringing in requests at any time. Appearing on Google only to leave the customer waiting is winning the game and losing on penalties.
