AI agents vs chatbots: what changes for your business
“Let’s add a chatbot to the site.” It’s a common phrase. But often what the company really needs is an AI agent. The difference isn’t just technological: it’s about results.
What is a chatbot? And what is an AI agent?
A chatbot follows rules: if the user types A, it replies B. It works for FAQs and fixed scripts, but breaks as soon as someone goes off-script.
An AI agent understands context, makes decisions and executes actions: it queries systems, books meetings, qualifies leads and knows when to hand the case to a human. A chatbot answers; an AI agent solves.
When is a chatbot enough? And when do you need an AI agent?
A chatbot is enough when questions are repetitive, have fixed answers and the goal is simply to deflect simple contacts. An AI agent is the right choice when:
- Customers ask varied questions in natural language;
- You need to query information in real time (stock, orders, calendar);
- You want the system to execute actions: schedule, qualify, register, summarise.
Practical example: the same customer, two experiences
The customer asks: “Has order 12345 been shipped?”
With chatbot: they get a generic link to the tracking page. If the question is slightly different — “What if I want to change the address?” — the chatbot doesn’t know what to do.
With AI agent: the system queries the order, replies with the real status and, if needed, starts the address change or hands the case to a human with full context.
Conclusion
Chatbots and AI agents are tools for different problems: one automates simple answers, the other reduces human work in complex processes. If you want to understand what makes sense for your case, read our guide on what AI agents are.
